MAGX Interview with Bobby V

Bobby V formerly known as Bobby Valentino is seriously Blowin Up the charts! He now is a CEO of his own record label Blu Kolla Dreams, an imprint of EMI and is responsible for one of the most catchiest hooks ever written! Yep, Mrs. Officer by Lil Wayne? That was Bobby singing.
What are some of your inspirations?
Really it’s been my dream forever, I wanted to be a performer God blessed me with a voice that’s one of a kind. I’ve worked to get here and I believe, when you earn it you appreciate it more.
What sets Bobby V apart from the competition? Im the people’s champ a lot of artists have a lot of bells and whistles to them, I just make records, for the people. I’ll get you an autograph or what you need if I can, I’m for the people.
What can you tell us about the process for THE REBIRTH? I’ve been working on The Rebirth for about a year, I worked with Raphael Saadiq (Tony! Toni! Toné!)
I like recording in L.A. because when I record in Atlanta all of my friends come to the studio and it’s hard to get work done. I like studios that have good ambience cuz it’s all about the vibe. I recorded in Las Vegas with Timbaland and I think that’s why that album came out so hot that was the vibe. Raph’s studio in cali, has a crazy good vibe and that helps because I’m a person that likes to be on another planet when im recording.
What was it like auditioning for american idol? It was a cool experience, definitely a learning experience. I didn’t make it but I guess that’s good because now I have this, it was just an avenue of trying to get out there. I thought I had what it took but I guess I didn’t. It taught me that I had to keep moving and evolving to get better at what I do. It really just provided me the fire I needed to improve my craft and become successful at what I do.
You’ve worked with many big artists in the industry, which colab has been your favorite? Raphael Saddiq, I really didn’t know what to expect. Everyone has been cool though. Lil wayne was amazing to work with he’s such a workaholic when he’s in in the studio he kicks it. Luda, Timbaland everyone in the game it has been good.
How was it working with Lil Wayne and being part of one of the most catchiest hook ever? They just told me to write to this beat, so I was really talkin about a girl, “When I get up all in her and stuff I make her scream we oh we oh we” I’m giving her that good loving. Wayne thenchanged it to a song about an officer and just ran with it.
For your song to work you gotta have a hot track and badass hook. if you can’t remember that hook, the next time around 9 times out of 10 it won’t be a hit.
How do you feel about the current state of hiphop music? I feel like hip-hop is more dominant than R&B these days compared to 90’s when you had Boys II Men and stuff like that. Things are much more rap driven now. the new thing is having a R&B hook over a rap song. That’s like the new key to gettin a hit. They are both kinda comin together to create a new form of music.
How does bobby v like to spend his downtime? I just like to kick it, chill, go out hit a club. Where ever the young ladies are at that’s where I like to be. I like to just live life, work out, play sports, hit a bar or just kick it with the family. Partyin’ you know where ever it’s at that’s where I’m at.
If you could work with anyone who would it be and why? Prince, He’s definitely one of my biggest influences, I grew up on him. And I would definitely like to work with him.
What has been your proudest moment so far?Blue Kolla Dreams my new label, definite ly. I used to be on Def Jam and have since moved on to an impring of Emi/ Capital called Blue Kolla Dreams which is my label. I’m a C.E.O. and run my own label. It’s been one of my dreams and my venture has been successful so far. Sop right now I’m just tryin to make that a household name.
