Introducing: Dommin

Dommin is the newest addition to the Roadrunner Records family, and their new record Love is Gone has quickly become a favorite around the MagX office, be sure to pick it up when it comes out May 12 you can even get it on iTunes! If you love H.I.M., Danzig, Type O Negative, and Nine Inch Nails this band is definitely worth your time.
Describe some of your influences? They vary really, anywhere from Rammstein to Danzig to Metallica, Depeche Mode, the Cure to old crooners like Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin
How have things changed since signing with roadrunner records? The main change, is that I’ve been able to put more energy and focus into the music i’m making. I’ve also been able to connect with more bands.
The first single my heart, your hands what can you tell our readers about it? Well, it came really from getting out of one relatonsip getting ready to enter something new, the past really creates a situation and you start to feel somewhat vulnerable and scared. So because of that you tend to fight the progress of something new, because you remember that pain. On the surface it seems like a song about heartbreak, but in the end it’s more of a song about vulnerability and fear and not wanting to let your guard down.
You have been compared to Peter Steele (Type O Negative), Trent Reznor (NIN), and Glenn Danzig, how do you feel about that? Flattered, and humbled, Danzig’s voice is one that people respect and admire. Any kind of comparison to him is definitely an honor. Pete steele has a voice of tremendous strength and range so it’s also an honor to be compared him and to those singers.
How did you come up with your sound? Dommin is essentially a rock band and to me there was always an element missing, something more than just drums and guitars. I wanted something more. I’m a big fan of film scores, so to hear entire orchestras strings and bells, just an array of different instruments, it felt like almost a no brainer to try to bring all that into the music. Like I said I was always inspired by film scores and of course Depeche Mode so I love the synth, you put rock’n’roll with orchestration and synth melodies and that’s when you get the sound we have.
How do you feel about self marketing sites such as myspace, facebook, and last.fm?
I think they’re amazing, they are amazing tools that allow bands and fans to connect without anyone in between, them. It also allows music to be really pure so you can hear it exactly the way it’s supposed to be heard. The fact that I can go on myspace and show a thousand people my songs, it seems almost like a substitute for getting in a van and play ing a small tour. Bands that aren’t using it are truly missing out. It’s the modern equivalent of a record store.
How was it working with Logan Mader of (Machine Head, Soulfly) It was awesome, Logan’s a genius in the studio workin with protools he’s very fast and efficient. He’s also got a great ear for music. and you have Lucas Banker, who’s the other half, Lucas has an amazing ear for melody and songwriting, combined together they are a truly powerful production team. (The production team is known as Dirty Icon) Working with them was like having 2 great pairs of extra ears. Doing songs that I’m doing, they were able to bring something out or point out things I wasn’t hearing which help make the song be as good as they could be.
Reviewing your playlist I see everything from Depeche Mode to Flight of the Conchords to Paramore, how important is diversity to you?
I think that, there’s a kind of music for every mood you might be in. for someone to say they only listen to metal or reggae, they’re kinda missing out on things that are out there. For aggression or working out I can listen to somethin heavy, but for relaxyin I’m not going to want to listen to Slayer. I think it’s just natural for anyone to have a range of moods or emotions they can open up to all different kinds of music.
Album comes out May 12 through roadrunner, it should be in all stores and digital stores. The album’s called Love is Gone. songs that made the record make it a very painful album but there’s a whole range of songs for different people. Starting mid april we’ll be on tour with the Birthday Massacre and I Am Ghost so we will be on tour for the next year or two. I really hope to meet all the fans that have stuck with us since the beginning as well as meet all the new fans that are just finding out about us.
